October means colorful foliage, hot chestnuts, cool ciders and (spooky) pumpkins. But it also means that the gastronomic scene in Austria begins to withdraw to a certain extent and that autumn is greeted with a wide variety of festivities. And so the tenth month of the year has much more to offer. We have looked at the best culinary tips for Vienna (and the surrounding area) that may not be on everyone’s bucket list.
habs*gut, Maria Enzersdorf
The habs*gut Tagesbar in Maria Enzersdorf is a café and restaurant where you can enjoy excellent food and drinks. But this description only scratches the surface. In addition to its great location at the foot of the picturesque Liechtenstein Castle (incidentally the ancestral seat of the Princely House), the fantastic culinary options and the refreshingly original interior design, the restaurant is a meeting place for generations. The host couple Carina and Martin Rohrbach, who are dedicated to their work, and their motivated co-entrepreneurs make the place a special destination. Our recommendation: the braised beef stew – to die for. But the brunch has also earned a pretty legendary reputation over the last 8 months – which is how long the habs*gut has been around. Note: opening times have changed for the fall! There are numerous other events in the pipeline, so stay tuned.

Oktoberfest 2024 at Gleis//Garten
Although not yet as well known as its big role models in the Vienna Prater or on the Munich Theresienwiese, the event in Vienna’s first food hall is still worth a visit. Traditional Oktoberfest elements are celebrated in a relaxed atmosphere. The beer is expected to flow here until October 6th with free admission. The fixed program includes, among other things, 5 beers specially brewed on site, live music and a daily program. Groups also have the option of reserving their own beer keg, which can then be tapped directly at the table itself.

Culinary Tips für Wien: Der Stadtheurige
We already reported on the pop-up of the Markterei this summer. And indeed, the city tavern has long since become a permanent fixture. Inside the former hydraulic engineering laboratory in the ninth district, it is now market day every Friday and Saturday. Regional producers offer their fine goods here. The range extends from baked goods from the organic bakery to meat products from the Lower Austrian butcher and freshly made mozzarella. Not to mention, of course, the wide range of natural wines from different winemakers. Just like at a real market, you have the opportunity to talk to the producers and learn exciting facts about the goods.

Bumbu Nights im Moby Dick
Of course, wine pairing with a multi-course menu is something everyone knows. But cocktails as food companions? This is still a relatively new concept. But one that can absolutely succeed. Provided, of course, that the right people are at work. And the name Sammy Walfisch guarantees that this is the case. The bar manager has been combining great food and spectacular drinks for quite some time. This time in cooperation with the rum-based spirit drinks from Bumbu. The result is a great menu that includes creamy burrata, fresh rosemary foccacia and crispy barbecue chicken on the food side. On the drinks side, on the other hand, guests can look forward to successful variations on classic drinks. The menu can be booked for € 58 in the beautiful Mobby Dick Bar until October 13.

Pumpkin Festival am Himmel
For 25 years now, at the end of October, everything in Döbling has traditionally revolved around the pumpkin. The event is therefore a permanent fixture in our culinary tips for Vienna in the fall. This year, on October 26 and 27, everything will once again revolve around the fruit. The program includes a Styrian farmers’ market, where you can purchase first-class products from the culinary regions. Whether you are looking for Schilcher Sturm (a type of young wine), Vulkanland ham, scarlet runner beans or pumpkin delicacies, visitors are sure to find what they are looking for here. A special highlight every year is the Styrian Pumpkin Gourmet Street, which treats guests to delicious pumpkin dishes, wine and Sturm (new wine). Entertainment is also provided for the youngest visitors, with special kite-flying workshops and pumpkin carving. Please note: Stopping and parking are strictly prohibited on the Höhenstraße, except in the designated parking lots!
