It is a cherished tradition that is repeated every year: at the end of the summer, many streets in the capital present themselves from their friendliest side. This is when the sales tables are set up in front of the stores and little goodies are laid out for visitors. The street festivals in Vienna also attract numerous guests thanks to musical support and an extended gastronomic offer. This makes them a real highlight on the one hand. On the other hand, they are also a welcome opportunity to cultivate any social contacts that may have lain dormant over the summer in a pleasant setting. We have taken a look at our 5 favorite events and what they have to offer.
The Währinger Straßen Fest 2024
The festival on the main shopping mile in Vienna’s beautiful 18th district will take place this year on Friday, September 20. From 11 am to 7 pm, Währinger Straße from Gürtel to Aumannplatz will become a party zone. Numerous bands will heat up the atmosphere on the festival stage at Kutschkerplatz, while a colorful mix of vendors will be selling their wares. Children will not miss out either. In addition to the children’s flea market, there is a separate stage for the youngest at Schubertpark and the popular face painting for children.
Flaniermarkt Neubaugasse
Twice a year, Neubaugasse becomes the longest flea market in the city, making it a true institution of street festivals in Vienna. Merchants have been using this method to liven up their neighborhood since 1983. The next time is on 27th and 28th of September 2024 Between 8:30 a.m. and 7 p.m., the entire Neubaugasse is a hive of activity. Lively market activity, a varied supporting program and culinary highlights create an ambience that invites you to shop and linger. In addition to vintage products and classic flea market rarities, stylish, artfully crafted new goods are also on offer.
Street festivals in Vienna: Long Night of the Markets
Admittedly, the Long Night of Viennese Markets is not necessarily a classic street festival. And yet it has its place in this list. After all, we love Vienna’s markets and appreciate their diversity. The third edition of the night edition will take place on Friday, August 30, 2024. In addition to the extended shopping opportunities until 11 pm, 120 hours of art and culture are also planned. And these are some of the highlights:
- The Karmelitermarkt with children’s theater between 6 and 7 pm and a performance by the band Dunkelbunt between 7 and 10 pm
- The Naschmarkt offers several stations with their own program points. There is soul and jazz at Schleifmühlbrücke, brass music at Johanna-Bauer-Platz and international bands along Wienzeile.
- More than 70 creative exhibitors with artistic and creative goods await potential buyers at the Ottakringer Brunnenmarkt. Food trucks offer their partly handcrafted food and drinks while well-known DJs provide the necessary background music.
The Reindorfgassen Fest
Perhaps a bit of a likeable underdog among the street festivals in Vienna. But a pretty legendary one. After all, both the music and the food and drink on offer are not to be sniffed at. Visitors have the opportunity to 6th and 7th of September 2024 to see for yourself. Under the motto Bahö in Fünfhaus is back, there are exciting acts to marvel at on 3 stages. In addition to 5/8erl in Ehr’n, Indeed Unique and a great children’s program with readings and concerts ensure a successful weekend with free admission.
Ottakringer Kirtag 2024
Strictly speaking, the Kirtag in the heart of Ottakring only marginally fulfills the criteria to be ranked among the best street festivals in Vienna. And yet, in our opinion, it belongs there. Since 1979, it has been providing an exuberant atmosphere with good wine and beer. The penultimate weekend in September always attracts numerous guests. And this year is no exception: from September 20 to 22, 2024, the “Alter Ort”, Ottakringer Straße 200, will be a hive of activity until late in the evening under the watchful eye of the parish church, driven by bands such as Wiener Wahnisnn.
