The dictionary defines the term sandwich as “two slices of bread folded together”. Behind this profane description, however, there can be real culinary delights. But for a long time the word hadn’t really got around in our part of the world. A circumstance that was to change abruptly in the autumn of last year. In September 2022, Chicago-born Darrin McCowan opened “Dazwischen“, a place for hungry people to go – does he make the best Sandwiches in Vienna?
Sandwich Revolutionaire
The inconspicuous picture with the much more conspicuous message hangs meaningfully in the simple dining room of the restaurant. During our visit, 8 seats are waiting for their guests, and English-speaking natives keep coming to pick up food for take-away. Obviously, not only McCowan himself has noticed the absence of good sandwiches in his new home, but also other American expats. They have probably rediscovered a piece of the old home in the Servitenviertel.
It is fair to say that the main focus is not on the interior and ambience. Although the reception and service are very friendly and cordial, the focus is on good food and drink. Perhaps more important anyway, but in any case it is a complete success.
What’s on the Menu?
As already mentioned at the beginning, the term sandwich can be broadly defined. The dictionary thus provides the legitimisation for a very diverse menu. In addition to the classic B.L.T. (bacon, lettuce, tomato) sandwiches, there are also very exciting burger and hot dog creations. For example, there is the classic Chicago Dog, which in this case is a way of uniting people. A Frankfurter made in Vienna from pure beef comes with a slight spiciness in an airy homemade bun sprinkled with poppy seeds. A poem that absolutely must be eaten with the fingers, the mess is part of it.
The Dazwischen Burger with stunning bacon jam (sic!) in a homemade brioche bun is also a fine choice, and be sure to order the homemade fries with it. The vegan highlight is the Whats Up Doc. What is made here from a carrot as a sausage substitute borders on magic. For this purpose, it is first grilled, then smoked over hickory wood and finally cooked sous-vide. The work of art is garnished with wonderfully caramelised onions with the necessary crunch, a dream team.
The Beverage Selection
The self-service drinks fridge has some unexpected gems to offer. Beer lovers in particular will get their money’s worth. There are up to 20 different varieties to choose from. These include the drinkable Munich Spaten beer or the Belgian Dubbel Honey, I Love You. Brewed in Vienna, this is a strong bock beer that is refined with orange peel and honey and goes very well with tasty dishes. But beware, it has an impressive 8.5% alcohol content!
Bottom Line
If you want to enjoy the best sandwiches in Vienna (in the broadest possible sense of the word), this is the place to go. It’s almost impossible to pick a number one, the different creations are too good. Homemade bread, pickles and sausage made according to the house recipe, you can taste the attention to detail. So there is no choice but to come back again. We are already looking forward to the Merguez Royale or the El Cubano with great pleasure.
