On November 23, 2022, the series “Wednesday” premiered on Netflix. The hit show about outcast Wednesday Addams thrives on humor that is blacker than Vantablack. From outstanding actors. And, of course, impressive images. But where are the “Wednesday” filming locations?
From Highschool to a Castle
Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) is an outcast. Dressed in black, with a sense of humor that makes Kafka look like a joker and a tendency towards sadism, it’s not easy for her to make friends at high school. Actually, she should be happy when her parents (played magnificently by Luis Guzmán and Catherine Zeta-Jones) decide to send her to the “Nevermore Academy“. But cheerfulness and Wednesday Addams do not go together. And even at the school for “monstrous misfits” she initially has her difficulties with the social structures there.
But where is the real Nevermore Academy? Does the place even exist? Can you visit the most important of Wednesday’s filming locations? In fact, Cantacuzino Castle held forth for the exterior shots. It’s in Romania, only about an hour from Bucharest. And about two and a half from Sighișoara. That one is cool because Castle Bran, the inspiration for Dracula’s Castle, is located there. The Cantacuzino Castle looks a little different in reality than it does in the series. The roof was made a little more pointed in post-production with the help of CGI.
Other Wednesday Filming Locations
The castle can be visited, it is actually worth seeing. There is an art gallery on the second floor. And in the park there is a sculpture garden. The castle was mainly used for the exterior shots. Many scenes were shot at the Buftea Film Studios in Bucharest. But there are still a few more Wednesday filming locations to visit.
For example, they filmed the forest scenes in Transylvania (duh!). Also, the crew was out and about in the village around the castle. It bears the pretty name Bușteni. Supposedly, they filmed in the winter so that a bit of a dreary vibe would linger over the scenes. The interior shots were supposedly taken at Casa Monteoru. The impressive building is located in Bucharest and was built in 1874.
Also nearby: the ski resort of Sinaia. Here, the Gara Regala train station, once reserved for royals, is a protagonist in the series. And the Nevermore Academy’s greenhouse? That’s actually in the Bucharest Botanical Garden. It was built in the late 19th and covers 18 hectares.
More facts about “Wednesday”
Aside from the fact that the series is pretty fun and was shot in Europe, there are a few interesting facts surrounding “Wednesday.” For example, the 2022 series received two Golden Globe nominations: one for “Best Series” and the other for “Best Series Lead Actress.” And in which category? Correct. Comedy/Musical! It’s almost obvious.
Speaking of “hand”: “Thing”, was portrayed by a real person, namely Victor Dorobantu. The contortions he has to perform in his blue suit are incredible. On the subject of “contortions”, we immediately think of Wednesday’s legendary dance to “Goo Goo Muck” by “The Cramps” (episode 1.04). Jenny Ortega developed the choreo for it herself.
One who should be well familiar with the Addams Family universe is Christina Ricci. She plays Marilyn Thornhill, a schoolteacher, in the series. In 1991 and 1993, Ricci was seen in the role of Wednesday. The monster family was dreamed up by cartoonist Charles Addams. His cartoons appeared regularly in “The New Yorker” from 1930 to 1980. One last fact: The first four episodes were directed by Tim Burton.
