The inn opposite the Weinhauser church in Vienna’s Währing district has been in existence for over 100 years, since 1917. What could once be described with a clear conscience as a classic suburban inn has long since developed into a modern and innovative restaurant, but without forgetting its roots. So what can you expect at “Zum gemütlichen Weinhauser” in Vienna?
The Look and Feel of the Restaurant
Wooden armchairs and white-covered tables characterise the appearance. The wood-panelled walls and the bookshelves filled with reading material and preserving jars give an extremely homely impression. A particularly special eye-catcher is the Zirben schnapps in the glass skull, which is in the process of being made, but more on this later.
The well-stocked children’s corner is not exactly commonplace. In addition to colouring books and pencils, it also offers all kinds of other entertainment material for the youngest guests. In the warmer months of the year, you can sit in the shade of the not too large garden under the tall trees of Gentzgasse.
The Food & the Drinks
As already mentioned, the creations at “Zum gemütlichen Weinhauser” in Vienna are a refreshing combination of classic dishes and modern interpretations. First of all, the homemade lemonades deserve a mention. Original and excellent in taste. We tested the gin and tonic, which actually tastes like the famous highball, and the wonderfully caramel pear – both absolutely recommended.
Among the dishes, there were several schnitzel variations that were tasty across the board. Whether sur cordon bleu, veal wiener or the pork version, all were convincing. The pasta of the Citrus Papardelle was homemade, and the very good Beef Tartar is available in an Asian version as well as the classic one. But the range of dishes on offer is by no means exhausted here. We look forward to our next visit and the temptations of the wild boar spare ribs and the honey roast.
For lovers of Viennese offal cuisine, the menu offers some specialities. Baked bull’s testicles, baked calf’s heart or roasted rabbit’s liver are not necessarily everyone’s cup of tea, but they are reportedly available in top quality at the Währinger Wirtshaus. All of this is washed down wonderfully with one of the three available Golser beers or a homemade Zirben schnapps (caution: strong).
Should you try “Zum gemütlichen Weinhauser” in Vienna?
The very good service knew how to inspire from the start: very attentive, competent, equipped with a lot of knowledge and always with an ear to the guest. The food and drinks are homemade wherever possible. Much of the food is prepared and fermented by the chefs themselves, which is not a matter of course, but a worthwhile effort. The price-performance ratio is okay, you definitely get something for your money.
This traditional restaurant is usually very busy, so don’t forget to book well in advance. If you have the opportunity, we recommend choosing a seat in the garden. The odeur of the cuisine lingers for quite a long time in your clothes. Top tip: As already mentioned, the Zirbene is prepared in-house. For this purpose, the Weinhauser receives countless kilograms of Swiss stone pine cones. More, in fact, than he can process or subsequently sell. Therefore, towards the middle/end of the summer, “bockerl” are available here for you to prepare yourself.
