Lovers Deep” emerges from the depths of the internet with regularity. Especially when magazines are looking for extremes and records. An overnight stay in a submarine is considered the most expensive hotel experience in the world. The stay is said to cost up to € 215,000 per night. What do you get for that? And what is actually behind the story?

The equipment
“Lovers Deep” is part of the collection of luxury tour operator Oliver’s Travels. Like all of the 2,000 or so carefully selected villas that the company offers for rent worldwide, “Lovers Deep” is something special. The overnight stay in the submarine should be as stylish as possible. A submarine was therefore chosen as the “housing” for the world’s most expensive hotel experience, the interior of which was completely converted to meet the needs of luxury travelers.

There are three crew members on board who look after the well-being of the guests: a captain, a chef and a personal butler. The crew’s accommodation is located at the other end of the submarine to ensure maximum privacy for guests in love. You need it, because part of the experience is not just the overnight stay in the submarine. You also get a special tasting menu, which is supposed to have an aphrodisiac effect. Complete with caviar, oysters and chocolate.
A night in a submarine
Guests have access to luxurious bathrooms, a lounge with panoramic windows and, of course, a master bedroom. Lovers Deep can dock anywhere in the world. In other words, at any port. So if you want, you can board a submarine in the Caribbean or in the far north. Up to you, according to “Oliver’s Travels”. A private speedboat is available to guests as standard. Helicopter transfers are available on request. The concierge service from “Oliver’s Travels” takes care of details such as rose petals in bed and champagne breakfasts.

When the company introduced “Lovers Deep” in 2014, Oliver Bell, the co-founder of “Oliver’s Travels”, said: “All of our handpicked luxury villas have something unique and quirky about them, but Lovers Deep really stands out as one of our most whimsical. We are always fascinated by the colorful variety of requests we receive through our Oliver’s Concierge Service and look forward to creating bespoke packages for those who want to join the Mile Low Club with us.”

He qualifies: “Although this accommodation is not an option for claustrophobics or people with a fear of water, we have a range of accommodation that offers excellent value for money for families or groups, with average prices in France of just £39 p.p. – and all of which are firmly on land and not under the sea.”
What can a night on “Lovers Deep” do?
It all sounds quite exciting, doesn’t it? And someone will already have enough money (or bought followers) to try it out. At least as a once-in-a-lifetime experience. And then report on what an overnight stay in a submarine is really like. So we did some research. A lot of research. After all, many media outlets – including well-known ones – have been reporting on “Lovers Deep” for almost 10 years. After all, the “most expensive hotel in the world” has clickbait and SEO potential.

The fact that there are no testimonials and no booking link doesn’t seem to bother anyone. The story is spun further, YouTube videos are edited together with stock video footage and many people find it normal that there are only renderings instead of real photos. Yet the effort required to look behind the story is not that great. An email to “Oliver’s Travels” is enough. Because then you find out: “Lovers Deep” doesn’t exist.
It’s a marketing campaign that has been a self-runner (and in our opinion: pretty brilliant!) since February 2014. We not only love the idea and effectiveness behind it. But also the fact that we can now see exactly which media are at least a little critical. And which simply copy from each other and happily spread a fairy tale – because it simply performs well. Or it’s just easier than doing the research. We think “Oliver’s Travels” is just great. And you should too. Take a look at the company’s great properties: oliverstravels.com
