How many times in our lives have we heard that we should drink enough water? I, for one, have heard it a billion times. Do I drink more because of it? No. Have I tried? Yes. In the meantime, I even need a digital drinking assistant. And all that just so I don’t go dry. What I can report about my Lucy Smart Cap experience after one month:
Why do we have to drink water?
The body is a pretty interesting contraption. In order for it to run the way it’s supposed to, it doesn’t just need “fuel” in the form of calories. It also needs water to function. That’s because H2O gets vitamins, salt, minerals and sugar from food. In the cells and tissues, it keeps the body in shape. Water cools through sweat. It helps with digestion and is important for the kidneys to function properly.
On the one hand, how much water the body needs depends on lifestyle. On the other hand, of course, it also depends on factors such as height, weight, age and so on. Normally, the body lets you know when it needs water by feeling thirsty. However, not all people find it equally easy to recognize thirst. Me, for example. I actually have to consciously remind myself to drink something again. Otherwise, I would simply forget in everyday life. But adults should drink two to three liters a day.
Drinking with support
Since I also do a lot of sports, my fluid intake should be over two liters per day. In fact, I “manage” to drink about 20 coffees and maybe half a liter. I’ve already tried all the little tricks: fill two bottles in the morning and make it a goal to drink them throughout the day, for example. Works well until I forget to fill the bottles.
Another trick is the best man of all. On vacation and weekends, when I spend a lot of time with him, he’s the one who regularly reminds me to take a sip. Of course, though, on press trips, at appointments, or at work, he can’t stand next to me and nudge me every 15 minutes.
Lucy® Smart Cap Experiences
There has to be a middle ground. Easy to take along. Easy to use. Yet somehow “loud” enough that I don’t forget it. Rather by chance I stumbled across the Lucy® Smart Cap. I’ve known the Austrian company behind it, waterdrop, for a while. They don’t just make beautiful water bottles, but also little cubes that you put in the water for flavor. Which is a great idea. If you drink water …
And it is precisely the latter that the new screw cap is designed to change. It is supposed to train you to drink water regularly. It’s quite simple: You order the Lucy® Smart Cap and screw it onto your waterdrop bottle. Then you install the accompanying app and answer a few questions. The app calculates how much water you need per day. Using sophisticated technology, the pretty cap then measures how much you drink. In the app, it shows progress, averages and milestones. Without you having to keep track manually.
How the Smart Cap works in everyday life
So on the one hand, the visual display alone motivates you to reach for the bottle more often. And on the other hand, there’s the little flashing light in the cap. It flashes at regular intervals and encourages you to take a sip. Thanks to integrated UV-C technology, the Smart Cap with Light cleans your bottle. It prevents 99.99 percent of all bacteria, molds and viruses from multiplying.
If the battery of the Lucy® Smart Cap is empty, you simply recharge it via a USB-C cable. The Smart Cap can be screwed onto all waterdrop® bottles older than 2020. With the exception of the Toddler Bottle and Sports Bottle. In practice, the smart bottle cap has actually already paid off for me. My Lucy Smart Cap experiences are really good ones.
My conclusion
I have actually steadily increased my average water intake over the past three weeks. I still find it difficult to reach 100 percent. But: Now I manage to reach my drinking goal at least every now and then. At around 70 euros, the Smart Cap may not seem like a bargain at first glance. But behind it is sophisticated technology made in Austria.
And the cap is quite robust and thus durable. The battery lasts for several days and is quickly recharged. Synchronization with the app is via Bluetooth and was always possible without any problems during my test. From me, a clear recommendation – my Lucy Smart Cap experiences are clearly good ones.
