Café Central in Vienna closed: Reopening in fall 2026

Café Central is a cultural institution in Vienna– at least for visitors from all over the world. There was a huge outcry on various social media channels when it was announced that Café Central in Vienna would be closing on March 16, 2026. However, relief followed on its heels, as the closure is only temporary. You’ll be able to queue again in the fall, come rain or shine.

The legendary coffee house in Vienna’s Herrengasse originally opened its doors back in 1876, which means it is celebrating its 150th birthday this year. Reason enough to treat the grand dame to a general refurbishment. Managing Director Kay Fröhlich promises that this will be carried out very carefully: “We are safeguarding the historical identity of the building and at the same time carrying out a comprehensive technical modernization of the listed building.”

In plain language, this means that work processes are being optimized, storage and production facilities are being expanded and targeted investments are being made in energy-efficient solutions. The employees are also a key focus. They will have a daylight-flooded lounge and all the prerequisites for improved working conditions. The main kitchen and patisserie will also have more space.

What the renovation means for guests

The architect responsible for the renovation is Peter Klein from A.C.C. Ziviltechniker. He is aware of the responsibility involved and knows that it is above all the historical charm that makes the Central an institution. He promises: “Over the next few months, we plan to keep this time capsule in this form for future generations to experience.” So nothing will changefor guests for the time being. Despite all the modernization measures, they will still be able to take their photos in a traditional setting.

During the construction phase, the employees, 135 in total, will be accommodated in other Palais Events Veranstaltungen GmbH facilities, such as Palais Daun-Kinsky, the Börsesäle, the hotels of Verkehrsbüro Hospitality and DECENTRAL. This is a pop-up café that can be found just around the corner in Palais Harrach. Homemade pastries from the Central patisserie and coffee specialties are served here, as well as Spritz creations. A definite plus: the guest garden on the Freyung!
