Exotic destinations promise not only dream beaches and that beach feeling, but above all the discovery of new tastes. The island nation of Mauritius, located east of Madagascar, is no exception. Quite the opposite. The centuries of different immigrants have left their mark on the plates of the restaurants. The influences range from Creole to French to Indian and Chinese cuisine and are ideally complemented by tropical fruits and the bounty of the country’s diverse underwater world. We tell you what foodies in Mauritius should definitely try:
Wapalapam – Island Eatery, Le Morne Brabant
“Eat different” is the slogan of the restaurant at the foot of Le Morne. And the restaurant is indeed different. The owner duo of the now three branches differs significantly from all the others on the island. They are the former snowboard world champion Rok Flanders and the chef Willibald Reinbacher, who has already cooked successfully halfway around the world. In addition to the two strong personalities, the no less strong tastes of the food characterise the restaurant.
The chilli chicken or the fried tofu, for example, delight with their finely balanced yet very intense seasoning. The homemade vanilla ice cream also deserves a special mention. Without any flavour enhancers, they make one of the best ice creams you can get in Mauritius. For our loyal readers, there will be a special on this shortly. There is no dress code, everything is casual and relaxed – come as you are is the motto. The more you are, the more different delicacies you can try, and that pays off. Because ideally, the massive (handmade) tabletop will bend underneath.

Cooking Class at “Salt of Palmar”
The Adult Only Boutique Hotel in the east of the island has a regional focus as well as a culinary one. Plastic is completely avoided and all raw materials come from Mauritian producers. Guests of the hotel are encouraged to get in touch with them and experience the island state’s way of life at first hand. And as we all know, one of the best ways to approach new countries is through food. For it is not only love that goes through the stomach.
And there are few things more authentic and representative than a genuine Mauritius chicken curry. Chef Visham teaches his trainees how to prepare the dish from scratch. You will even make the curry paste yourself with volcanic stones and mortar rollers. Of course, you will also be allowed to taste the result, and you will like it. That’s a promise. In addition to the spice set for your first self-experiment at home, you will receive the written recipe as well as a certificate that will identify you as a trained curry chef from now on.

Foodies in Mauritius – Taste Buddies Streetfood Tour
Port Louis, the capital of Mauritius, is also the largest city on the island and the first port of call for immigrants from all continents. The city’s gastronomic scene is correspondingly diverse. And like almost everywhere else in the world, it is exciting to snack your way through the varied street food scene in Port Louis. To guarantee success, it’s a good idea to get a little local support.
We highly recommend the Taste Buddies tour. The guides are entertaining and impart all kinds of historical facts in addition to the epicurean information. The tour itself lasts about 3 hours, during which you will cover about 4 kilometres and taste up to 8 dishes and drinks. One thing is for sure: whether it’s roti (spicy if desired, but please be careful), Chinese dumplings Mauritian style or cucumber and potato as spicy pickle dishes, you’ll snack like the inhabitants of Port Louis.

Restaurants of Degrés Sud Hotel
The idyllic five-star hotel of the Relais & Châteaux hotel association has a lot to offer in an enchanting location near Grand Baie. The fine 29 rooms and suites are decorated in British-colonial style and, like the bar, take you back in time. However, you will not only be served excellent wines at the bar, but also in the three restaurants of the hotel. As befits a place of French provenance, 20 Degrés Sud also has a well-stocked wine cellar.
We convinced ourselves that the dishes in the kitchen not only sound good, but also taste good. So we unselfishly dared to try thinly sliced tuna yuzu style and filet steak. A recommendation! The good service and the excellent vegan lemon cake made for a successful evening. The dress code is smart-casual, but not too strict.

Fo Foodies in Mauritius – Kaz’alala
Some establishments keep a dog, others have a cat or two to get rid of less popular animals naturally. And still others have not just one, but several peacocks running around freely on their premises to keep an eye on things. In Kaz’alala, for example, we received a rather unwelcome visit from one of these beautiful feathered contemporaries. The restaurant is part of a bed and breakfast that also offers lunch and dinner. As it is part of the extended Heritage Le Telfair Resort, guests can use the area and get a discount on the facilities.
At Kaz’alala you dine on good local dishes in a pleasantly relaxed atmosphere. The papaya salad with smoked marlin, which is more or less the national fish of Mauritius, was refreshing, light and tasty. It was perfect for a hot tropical day. But keep an eye on the food, because like almost everywhere in Mauritius, the hungry birds are not far away and ready to steal the delicacies from your plate.
