As the attentive readers have certainly not escaped, we are of the opinion that the winter has a lot in store for us. Whatever kind of activity you enjoy, the salt in the soup are often the ski huts. Whether at the top of the peak, or down in the valley, they delight us with all kinds of epicurean masterpieces.
Well, some more and some less. The region of the 4-mountain ski area around Hauser Kaibling, Planai, Hochwurzen and Reiteralm not only has fantastic slopes to offer, but also a diverse range of gastronomic entertainment. To narrow down the variety of what is on offer, we have made a small pre-selection: Are these the best ski huts in Schladming?
Steireralm
The classic on the Reiteralm. At 1300 meters above sea level, the innkeeper Hansi has been welcoming his guests for more than 40 years and explains every year with a wink that he is actually already retired. The well-filed map holds some delicacies ready. In addition to the excellent goulash soup and the hearty Leberkäse, the homemade Kaspressknödel is especially recommended. The whole thing is washed down with a round of schnapps – whoever orders 10 gets a Steireralm T-shirt. Tip: At noon in time (from about 11:30 clock) to be on site to get one of the coveted seats.
Onkel Willy’s Hütte
The most historic hut in the region has existed since 1967. On the Planai it was and is an institution, which since 2019 has been taken over by 3 young savages and continues to be family-owned. How important the preservation of traditional fare as well as the original closeness to the guest is to the new operators becomes clear during a visit. Warm-hearted hosts and a menu peppered with regional products know how to please. Highlights are the roast pork, the toast (even better in summer!) and the spareribs on pre-order. Tip: The coffee is more than drinkable for a ski lodge.
Krummholzhütte
The Krummholzhütte is located at 1857 meters above sea level in the center of Hauser Kaibling. It has made a name for itself not only as a catering station, but also as an accommodation facility, and quite rightly so. The ideal location, the fantastic panoramic view and the good food speak for themselves anyway. The Kaiserschmarr’n is even so good that we actually had to give our tipster the promise to keep quiet. Good for you that she let us negotiate with her. If you order more than one, the Schmarr’n is served in a large pan – the indicated 3 portions are easily enough for 5 hungry mouths.
Hochwurzen Hütte
For over 100 years it has been enthroned at the summit of the Hochwurzen at 1852 meters above sea level and has been able to retain its cozy charm. Located directly at the cable car, it is the first port of call for thirsty and hungry mountain lovers. Especially recommended is a drink (whether ski water, beer or cocoa with shot we leave to you of course) on the sun terrace with incomparable views. Our tip: The Hochwurzen Alm is the smaller rustic dependence, which entices at the start of the night toboggan run just below the hut to a stop.
Almbar
At the summit of the Reiteralm it is the umbrella bar of our choice. Located at the top station of the 6-seater chairlift Gasselhöhe, there is always something going on here. To the apres ski hits of the hour, the ski hut fills up more and more around 4 pm. According to the rumor, on good days, generous guests sometimes throw in house rounds of champagne. Otherwise, the good, fairly priced prosecco also ensures pleasantly light legs on the last descent of the day.
Die Tischlerei
Die Tischlerei is, of course, not a ski lodge. Neither in the proper sense, nor in a related one. In fact, much rather one of the best restaurants in the entire region. So if, after all the fun in the huts, you’re in the mood for some more serious gastronomy, you’ll feel right at home here. The original aperitifs are convincing, the extensive wine list has some fine wines in store and the Chateaubriand for 2 is of very special meat quality. We would especially like to recommend the 6-course tasting menu, which reveals all the skills of the kitchen team. Don’t be put off by the unstated prices on the website. These are not exaggerated, although we can not quite understand the idea behind it.

As you can see, you will neither go hungry nor thirsty in the Schladming mountains. Our selection of the best Ski Huts in Schladming represents, despite attempted objectivity, of course only a very subjective excerpt from the gastronomic offer.
