The sea laps gently. The sun shines warmly on your skin. And palm trees sway gently in the wind. Sounds like a perfect vacation day? It is! But the perfect working day could soon look like that, too! Since Corona at the latest, remote working has become the norm. So there’s not much to be said against a workation on the beach. But what tips do you need to keep in mind?
The Beach-Workation-Index
HomeToGo, the world’s largest marketplace for vacation homes and apartments has just recently published a Beach Workation Index for the year 2023. The company has selected 150 dream beach destinations in Europe. And evaluated these according to strict criteria. The result is a list with a total of 35 places that are well suited for this type of stay.
The criteria: The average temperature must be at least 25 degrees in summer. HomeToGo also looked at how many co-working spaces are available, how high the average accommodation prices are, how long the sun shines and how fast the Internet is. Also important for workation at the beach: the range of vacation activities.
Top 5 Destinations for a Workation on the Beach
The highest score achievable in this index was 50, with Lisbon/Portugal coming closest with a total of 41.84 points. Second place went to Porto/Portugal with 40.66 points. Third place went to Barcelona, Spain. The metropolis achieved 39.70 points. Fourth place went to Nice/France (37.27 points), and fifth place went to Budva/Montenegro (37.15 points).
All of these locations scored outstandingly in terms of daylight hours. Lisbon also scored highly for the number of co-working spaces (9.99). The internet is particularly fast in Nice, while Barcelona has the most free time. By the way, the cheapest place to spend a workation on the beach is Porto.
Tips for your Workation
If you’re planning a (temporary) relocation, you obviously don’t need any nasty surprises. Careful research can avoid them. In any case, pay attention to how you normally spend your workday. If you’re easily distracted, it’s doubtful that the beach in front of you will do much for your productivity. Consider what your budget is. Also, find out what you can expect in terms of culture, language, internet speed and cost in your chosen location.
It is worth having some sort of “safety net” in case something does go wrong. That means good insurance and local contacts. Speaking of safety: If your workation takes you to a beach outside of Europe, make sure you know how long you are allowed to stay there. Keyword: Visa. Your passport also plays a role: Is it valid long enough? And get all the necessary vaccinations in time. A word to the end: If you have to have a lot of contact with colleagues or customers back home, consider the time difference.
