As we all know, after Christmas is before Easter. As enthusiastic Christkindlmarkt-goers, we have to bridge the long pintless time until the next Advent. So what could be more obvious than to inspect the best Easter markets in Vienna? As always, we have unselfishly set out to discover them for you.
Michaelerplatz – The Touristc One
Between Michaelertor, Fiakern and Roman foundations, all kinds of Easter articles are offered here by 20 stallholders. The charm of the imperial and royal past attracts not only locals but also tourists to the baroque Sternplatz. Visitors can buy beautifully decorated Easter eggs and flowers, as well as chocolate and pretzels or wine. Not a must see in our eyes, but can be taken in passing.
Am Hof – The Crafty One
One of Vienna’s most beautiful Christmas markets is located in the same place. Naturally, there is also a bit of overlap between the market participants. In addition to the champagne hut, we also saw and tasted the Bosnastand in December. Apart from the epicurean delights (tip: Uhudler Frizzante from the Uhudlerhütte), the market has a lot to offer in terms of craftsmanship. We were particularly taken with the fine homemade solid wood chopping boards and the bright glass flowers. Be a little careful with the beer: only the Speck Standl Bräu is available as a special bottled version of the Golser beer, which is mediocre at best.
Auf der Freyung – The Original
Der Alt Wiener Ostermarkt bietet neben schönem Kunsthandwerk und Dekorationsartikeln auch ein umfassendes Rahmenprogramm. Puppentheater für die Kleinsten einerseits, Musik- und Tanzeinlagen für die Größeren andererseits versetzen den historischen Platz vor dem Schottenstift in Frühlingsstimmung. Auffallend das umfangreiche Angebot an kunstvoll handekorierten Ostereiern und das guttuende Vorhandensein von Fassbier. Wie auch für die anderen Märkte gilt es auf das Bargeld nicht zu vergessen, ofmals ist die Kartenzahlung nämlich nicht möglich.
Schloss Schönbrunn – The One with the best Variety
70 exhibitors, live music, a hands-on rally and Easter bunny workshop provide pre-Easter variety in a royal ambience. The culinary variety ranges from beef goulash and potato dumplings to sweet classics like Kaiserschmarrn or poppy seed noodles. Those looking for decorations for the Easter table will be delighted with the diverse range on offer. From handmade wreaths and fine ceramics to products made of straw and pewter, there are all kinds of things to buy. The so-called “Wechselhütten” (changing huts) are remarkable, where small craft businesses are allowed to offer their goods for sale for a limited period of time.
